Abstract
This seminar will present the results of a digital exploration of the online (non-)collective Anonymous, and will argue that these challenge existing frameworks in the study of social movements. A combination of network and text analytical techniques on large social media datasets have been applied to open up the 'black box' of Anonymous, demonstrating its structural inconsistency, radical diversity and fundamental incoherence. The perspective of contentious branding will be introduced and defined in relation to existing concepts. A focus on the contested appropriations of the ‘semiotic repertoires' of movements might serve as an epistemological device, useful to be faithful to their multiplicitous nature, and to address the challenges and opportunities of digital social movements research.
