Abstract
Combating climate change requires adjustments with significant distributional implications. To build support coalitions, policymakers propose compensating individuals bearing the costs. What are the determinants of public opinion regarding climate compensation? We show that people who reside in coal-producing regions prefer compensation, the general public privileges diffuse redistribution mechanisms and investments, while vulnerable respondents have cross-cutting preferences.
